Changes to abuse laws needed
Changes to abuse laws neededChanges to abuse laws needed The Associated Press reported recently on an attempt in the Legislature to allow victims of abuse at the hands of state university doctors more time to sue the university for damages. That’s an important change that needs to happen. Following the revelations that Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry NASSAR sexually abused hundreds of his patients under the guise of medical treatment, the Legislature passed laws allowing people who were sexually abused as children to pursue legal action until their 28th birthday or three years from when they realize. they have been abused. The new legislation would expand the option to adults and let them file suit until whenever is later: 10 years from when abuse happens, their 28th birthday, or six years – instead of three – from when they realize they were abused. Sexual abuse is a traumatizing thing, and science shows victims can often bury the abuse for years, making them unaware or unwilling to admit they were abused even as they struggle with damage to their sense of self and their fight or flight system. When universities fail to responsibly react to allegations of abuse, they ought to be held accountable, and the law ought to back up the science that shows victims sometimes need time to process what happened to them before they seek justice. The NASSAR scandal at MSU showed the need, and the new legislation, which has support from both parties, could allow hundreds of men and women who have accused late University of Michigan sports doctor Robert Anderson of molestation to have their day in court. We urge lawmakers to adopt the proposed legislation swiftly.
