Dr. Anderson survivor pines for accountability after Michigan AD Warde Manuel’s Bo commentsA short, but uncomfortable distance separated them just as it did for most of the football season. Despite their close proximity, Vaughn said Manuel wasn’t among the handful of ex-teammates who came to see him as he waged a campaign seeking accountability and transparency from U-M’s leadership. This time, Manuel wasn’t there to support Vaughn, an Anderson victim who shared in the $490 million SETTLEMENT reached between the school and the survivors. “He could be on the forefront of saying, ‘It’s about change,'” Vaughn told the Free Press. “That now, it’s about putting our money where our mouth is and eradicating sexual ASSAULT, sexual ABUSE, not only in sport, but on these college campuses. He could be a change agent.” But Vaughn is skeptical his former teammate has the will to become one after seeing Manuel’s comments made on a college administration podcast last week. During an interview on an episode of “From the Chair,” Manuel praised Schembechler, the iconic coach whose legacy has been scrutinized since a May 2021 report commissioned by the U-M found he allegedly received multiple complaints about Anderson’s behavior but took no discernible action in response. It forced Vaughn to take stock of what happened to him when he played at Michigan from 1988-90. He said Anderson gave him approximately 50 prostate exams during that period. The ABUSE caused a reckoning for Vaughn more than 30 years later as he grappled with what had been done to him and his feeling of betrayal toward the people who had the power to protect him. That includes Schembechler, who won at least a share of 13 Big Ten championships in 21 seasons at Michigan and also served as the school’s athletic director during Vaughn’s first two years with the Wolverines. Referring to a 2007 book co-authored by the late coach with a chapter titled, “Do the Right Thing – Always,” Vaughn said, “Well, there is empirical evidence that shows he didn’t do the right thing always. “Think about this,” Vaughn said. “He could be the athletic director who changes all this.” Contact Rainer Sabin at rsabin@freepress.com.
