Opinion: The institutional betrayal of athletesOpinion: The institutional betrayal of athletes U.S. Olympic gymnasts Aly Raisman, Simone Biles, McKayla MARONEY and NCAA and world champion gymnast Maggie Nichols leave after testifying during a Senate Judiciary hearing into sexual abuse. Getty Images Activists’ ideas can illuminate a path through conceptual darkness. That’s clearly the case with efforts to eliminate the sexual abuse of athletes. Psychologist Jennifer Joy Freyd has labored in this intellectual field. She indicates that abusers aren’t just men, and VICTIMS aren’t exclusively women, but “there is a pretty big gender effect.” Both now and later in this piece, discussion emphasizes that the creation of insightful concepts has been the foundation for Freyd’s contributions. She considers sexual abuse a form of betrayal, developing the idea of “betrayal trauma,” which occurs when individuals or organizations violate the “trust or well-being” of those depending on them. Using this concept, one of Freyd’s students constructed a questionnaire about what she called “institutional betrayal,” occurring when parents, teachers, bosses, coaches, religious personnel or other authority figures fail to protect those in their care from sexual abuse or some other destructive treatment. She indicates that as her research began, many people, including some colleagues, seemed embarrassed or impatient with what they considered “an obscure little problem affecting a very small number of people.” Investigators, however, were already studying sexual assault, and many involved with the topic applauded the insight that DARVO, an acronym for. “deny, attack, reverse victim and offender,” provides. It’s a strategy, Freyd contends, where officials facing accusations of ignoring cases of sexual abuse not only reject the accusations but reverse the onus, claiming that unjustified attacks on them by those claiming their culpability make them the VICTIMS. DARVO is a provocative idea that reveals the perversity of the personnel promoting it.
