Raisman, Biles and Maroney among 90 women asking FBI for $1 billion for mishandling Larry Nassar sex abuse caseRaisman, Biles and Maroney among 90 women asking FBI for $1 billion for mishandling LARRY NASSAR sex abuse case A group representing 90 young women – including U.S. Olympic team gymnasts Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney and Aly Raisman – filed a federal lawsuit against the FBI on Wednesday, seeking more than $1 billion. in damages for misconduct. the bureau’s handling of its investigation into sexual abuse by former U.S. Olympic team physician LARRY NASSAR. Majority of plaintiffs say NASSAR abused them after his abuse was reported to the FBI in 2015, during a one-year period in which no meaningful investigation was undertaken and NASSAR continued to sexually abuse young people women and children. Many are athletes who have been associated with the USA Gymnastics program or Michigan State University, where NASSAR maintained a clinic. USA gymnasts left to right Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Maggie Nichols arrive to testify at a Senate court hearing about the Inspector General’s report into the FBI’s handling of the investigation LARRY NASSAR on Capitol Hill, September 15, 2021. Saul Loeb / Pool via AP The Justice Department announced just before Memorial Day weekend that the FBI agents the inspector general identified as responsible for the failed investigation – and subsequent attempts to mislead investigators from the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Justice – would not be charged. “My fellow survivors and I have been betrayed by every institution meant to protect us – the United States Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics, the FBI and now the Department of Justice,” Olympic gold medalist Maroney said in a statement. “It is clear that the only path to justice and healing is through the legal process.” Class administrative claims are filed under the federal tort claims law, which allows people who have been harmed by negligent or wrongful actions of the federal government to seek relief. Thirteen other VICTIMS of NASSAR filed similar complaints against the FBI in April. Although Wednesday’s filing was not the first under the law, it is the most significant and includes the most prominent of NASSAR’S accusers. Raisman, Maroney and others testified before Congress, calling for FBI accountability. The allegations detail a year-long gap between when the FBI first received reports of NASSAR’S abuse of gymnasts on the U.S. national team and his eventual arrest following an investigation by the local law enforcement, not the FBI. “The FBI knew LARRY NASSAR was a danger to children when his abuse of me was first reported in September 2015. For 421 days they worked with USA Gymnastics and USOPC to hide this information from the public and allowed NASSAR to continue assaulting young women. and the girls. It’s time for the FBI to be held accountable,” said NCAA national champion gymnast Maggie Nichols, NASSAR’S first VICTIM whose case was reported to the FBI’s Indianapolis field office. (USOPC is the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee.) The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The FBI declined to comment and referred NBC News to FBI Director Christopher Wray’s testimony to Congress, in which he acknowledged that “FBI folks had their own shot at stopping this monster in 2015 and failed. NASSAR pleaded guilty in 2018 to abusing 10 of more than 265 patients who have come. forward to say they were assaulted. He is serving up to 175 years in prison.
